Pottery first appeared in the era of Palaeolithic art around 18,000 BCE and arrived inEurope around 5,000 BCE. Pots are still the cornerstone of ceramics and making a pot connects us to our earliest ancestors in a way no other art form does. While themes and decorative motifs have evolved, the use and manufacture of pots persists. In this section, I explore the nature and range of ceramic vessels from simplest embellished pot to more complex utilitarian shapes.
